MTR is interested in collaborating with industrial partners to bring our expertise in membrane solutions to diverse industry segments.
Partnering Process
Challenging separations are encountered by companies in a wide range of different industries. In many cases these can be addressed with MTR’s current cutting-edge portfolio of membrane based gas and liquid separation products. But it also can be clear that additional membrane and/or process development is required to create a viable solution. In this case MTR partners with the industrial company to develop this solution, leveraging MTR’s 35 years of experience in successful membrane product development. Ownership of the solution will depend on how the partnering arrangement has been set up.
Another form of partnership is based on membrane development performed by an industrial company for an in-house application. Often the company does not want to be a membrane producer and prefers that MTR scales up membrane and module fabrication and completes the process design and engineering efforts. Ownership of the solution and whether this solution will be commercialized beyond the original end-user will depend on the partnering arrangement.
These partnerships work because both parties keep focused on their core strengths: MTR on its membrane process development expertise and the partner on its products and customers.
A partnering relationship typically develops as follows:
Initial contact is normally with MTR’s Research Group, often on an informal basis – “can you help us with this?”
If the partner sees merit in MTR’s proposals, a project materializes with a specific work scope and objectives.
As the project takes shape, an appropriate partnering agreement is worked out to clearly define the responsibilities and protect the interests of the parties.
MTR is actively working with partners on specific membrane projects in the automotive, environmental, aviation, and consumer products fields, mostly on a confidential basis.
Partnerships in the public domain include the following:
-
An example of a OEM-MTR partnership: Gasoline vapor recovery, where MTR’s partner, OPW Fueling Components, is supplying membrane-based systems (OPW Vaporsaver™) to recover gasoline vapors at retail service stations.
-
An example of a Industry-MTR partnership: Generating oxygen-enriched air for room air-conditioning systems
