Membranes excel at providing partial enrichment and bulk removal from most industrial flue gases.
Opportunity
While CO2 capture is most often considered for large industrial sources such as fossil-fueled power plants, cement plants, and metallurgical plants, there are opportunities to deploy capture system at smaller scale or apply them to other sources such as pulp-and-paper, waste-to-energy plants, or even to separate CO2 from biogases. Additionally, some carbon utilization schemes do not require CO2 at high purity or pressure. For those applications, a simple enrichment of CO2 from flue gases to 80 or 90% purity can be achieved at low cost.
Benefits
- Modular membrane units are scalable, compact, and easily configurable for retrofit applications
- Simple and passive operation
- Fast response time and excellent turn down
- No use of chemicals, so no chemical handing or emissions issues
- Low maintenance and operator requirements
- No steam use; minimal/low cooling water requirements/use
System Performance
- System size: 1 tonne CO2/day and up.
- CO2capture rate up to 90%, most economical ~50-60% capture rate.
- Produces high purity CO2or simply concentrate up to 85% purity with significant savings.
Application Options
- Biogas sources: digesters, fermenters, and landfills
- Fossil fueled industrial plants: cement, steel, waste-to-energy, refinery
- Natural gas fired boilers and turbines: NGCC, OTSG, CHP plants
